Wunderlist for Android?
Rebuilt, relaunched and really awesome!

Posted on September 5th 2011 by Matthew Bostock - 112 Comments

It’s been a little over 5 months since we launched Wunderlist for Android, and today we have some big news for all you droid heads. Lock and load your HTC Desires and Galaxy Tabs, Wunderlist has been rebuilt… from the ground up. No longer will you have to wait a second too long to enter a task, gone are the days of instability, want a widget? You got it. In the words of Daft Punk, Wunderlist for Android is ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’.

We didn’t just sit there and write lines of code for this. We travelled to a far away land on our unicorns, and found this beast at the end of a rainbow. Ok, that’s a lie. We did sit there and write lines of code, but with all the flamboyance of that very strange story. We wanted to improve Wunderlist for Android beyond your expectations, and make it one of the best damn apps available on the Android Market. We think we’ve got the goods.

Back to the drawing board

So why the change? Right off the bat, we’d like to say that we love the current Wunderlist for Android client, and so do others. But we always believe we can make things better, even if it means tearing old ideas up and starting from scratch. This blog post, for example, is in its fifth revision. The other versions were good, but I really wanted this to be something special – maybe a movie script one day. I’m sure Spielberg would dig it. Anyway, starting from scratch is important, and that’s what we did for Android. We rebuilt Wunderlist from the ground-up and now it’s native and completely brand new, giving us better scope to improve it for every device in the future. If there’s one thing we hope you’ve learned about 6Wunderkinder, it’s that perfection is key.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the all-new Wunderlist for Android

Go on, download a copy and fire it up. What’s new, exactly? Let’s take a look:

  • Drastic increase in overall speed and snappiness
  • Greater stability
  • Smaller footprint for those low capacity devices
  • Bundled Widget
  • Push notifications now as standard
  • Small UI improvements

I’m not sure if you saw our tweets, but we’ve been beta testing the new version this week. So what did you droidaholics think?

“The overall performance is really excellent now, no comparison to the version before”

Hendrik Meyer

“The performance improved quite a lot. Well done on that front”

Victor Scaletchi

“Widget is a huge plus!”

Spencer Shwetz

Follow our UI designer Ben Roe

Overall, the performance of Wunderlist for Android is incredible. There are many productivity tools out there for Android, but we believe Wunderlist is the best. With our new widget task tracking is even easier. You can view your ‘today’ tasks right from the home screen so you’re always up to date, or if you want to quickly add a task just tap on the + sign at the top right and you’ll be taken right into the app. It’s everything that you know and love about Wunderlist, but even faster and smarter.

Building Wunderlist for Android again, natively, has given us greater control over what we want to do, and how to fix and improve it in the future. As I’ve said, perfection is key. We’ve gone right back to the start, just for you, because your user experience is the most important thing to us. As you would expect, Wunderlist for Android is free and available in the Android Market.

Before you download, you need to take a few steps to ensure your data is safe. If you are already using Wunderlist with an account, sync one last time before you download the new version. If you have been using Wunderlist for Android without an account, you’ll have to create one. Once you have, sync before you download. So, without further adieu, go forth and download now droidsters.

We are always adding awesome feature requests and improvements from you to our Android roadmap, so what would you like to see in the next update?

Thanks! I just downloaded the new version. It looks great and seems to work great.

Some of the Dutch translations are a bit weird. Maybe one of the Wunderkids could check some of those ;-)

But overall I am very happy with the new app!

It runs on the phone, but I can’t login – “The email you entered is invalid”.

@wunderlisters, feel free to email for more details to help debug, but just in case:
    email domain is .co.uk
    Device is HTC Desire
I added the home page widget, then opened wunderlist and couldn’t sync. Rebooted. Still can’t sync but also the widget failed and I can no longer add the widget.

    Steve Root says

    Problem fixed.
    -> I uninstalled Wunderlist.
    -> Installed it from new.
    –> **Still wouldn’t sync**
->Went to market place, refreshed and it said there was an update available. Downloaded the update.
    -> Login was successful.

So… maybe there was another update to be run after the initial install and it would have worked?

Appreciate your efforts. Installing the update right now. But could you be a little more candid about why you chose to rewrite this app? Best if you could be technical. I understood that you used PhoneGap, or a similar framework, to build your cross platform product. And why this decision to rewrite the app, what made you do it? Would help a lot more people if you made that clear.

    Thanks

great news, can’t wait to download!

Phht… shaking head in disappointment… just upgraded to latest Android version… icon disappeared, found the App, now I have to go and find out what login details I used.

“Upgrading” does not get much more painful than this

If I didn’t have a todo list in wunderlist I would probably have deleted by now

Someone needs to sack the idiot who thought this was an acceptable upgrade model.

    Grrrrr

    7even says

Hello everyone, the problem was represented by the login does not accept certain characters such as symbols or numbers, I sent an email to the support center Wunderlist telling him of the problem, they responded immediately and told me they would solve the most soon. Now they have the application updated to version 1.1.2 and everything works fine. Congratulations on timeliness. Wunderlist enjoy :-)

    Thomas says

Thank you, that’s really an improvement and with this app you “won” me back from producteev. However, it would be great if the widget would not only show todays tasks but a list (for example sorted after date or priority, like today-tomorrow-thisweek… or starred-non starred).

in a future update, i’d like to have the lists in the same order they are in the browser app, where you can drag and drop them

    Scott Schwarzhoff says

    Hello from Appcelerator.

For now, Wunderlist for Android is written in Java. This is due to the fact that 6Wunderkinder needs access to widgets… and that the performance on Android isn’t quite where it needs to be at this moment due to a JavaScript runtime engine that we are sunsetting shortly.

For those interested, we are well down the road of upgrading our Android JavaScript engine to Google’s V8. Testing shows that the performance gains will be significant – at least 2x and most likely much more – and that performance will exceed even that of iOS. You can read more about what this means on our blog:

    http://developer.appcelerator.com/blog/2011/09/platform-engineering-android-runtime-performance-improvements.html

Note that iOS, PC, and Mac remain Titanium-powered.

I want to be clear that Titanium is an excellent development platform used by NBC, Kellogg’s ZipCar, GetGlue, Hotel Tonight, GameStop, Medtronic, eBay, PayPal, and others very successfully on Android. We continue to be the most popular cross-platform development solution, with over 25,000 apps built in just the past year and 200,000 mobile developers using our software.

Feel free to drop me a line with any questions: sschwarzhoff at appcelerator.com. We’re confident that Titanium will continue to be the platform of choice for many busineses like 6Wunderkinder that are looking to deploy their applications across mobile and desktop OSes.

    AJS says

The upgrade is a significant step forward. It is now a viable alternative to other apps so I will definitely give it a decent trial run this time, especially now the desktop version has also made significant strides.

A couple of flaws in the android app:

    1. The widget + button to add new tasks only opens the programme, it doesn’t add new tasks so it’s a bit pointless in practical terms.

    2. New tasks are added up in whichever list you’re in so if it’s today, new tasks go there with today’s date on them. It would be much better if they went to your inbox with no date as it’s now an extra step to remove the date.

    3. As someone else has said, you need to be able to pick a preferred list as default for the widget. I would like to use the starred list rather than Today as I don’t like putting dates on tasks unless absolutely necessary. I can use my calendar for that.

    4. Make the widget slightly larger, say 4×2 so we can see more tasks without opening the app. It’s 4 maximum at the moment.

Still good progress though. Keep up the good work.

Would be extra amazing if you could give an option to set what kind of tasks appear in widgets, ie. not only today’s tasks. Most tasks when set quickly do not have a due date, and they don’t show up in today’s widget.

Love the app on my Mac, and my iPhone but like the above, it simply force quits on Xoom. I’ve been trying to recommend to printers and developers but it defeats the purpose when I have to explain to them that the device I primarily use during meetings doesn‘t work with it and I need to switch to my phone for updating and creating new items.

If you want to buy a car, you will have to get the business loans. Moreover, my mother always takes a consolidation loan, which is really firm.

    Hi 6Wunderkinder

I have been using your wunderlist on OS X and iOS… it works great and I’m very happy with your professional workmanship :)

I have just recently purchased an Android Honeycomb Sony Table S… a beautiful device and have downloaded (from the Android Marketplace) wunderlist 1.2.0… that’s the only one they have.
I have had no problems logging in, syncing, or interacting with the list.

But I do have one issue, but I’m thinking it might be resolved if I could get access to wunderlist 1.2.2.
It looks like what I am running has been made for a mobile rather then a tablet, and when I use Honeycombs solution of running a mobile app, but blowing it up for a tablet, it looks awful… pixellated text and blurry images.

Does wunderlist 1.2.2 run on a tablet without having to use a magnifying glass to see the text?
If you have any thoughts on the matter, please let me know asap… in the meantime I will go hunting for wunderlist 1.2.2

    Thanks.

    Hi Hendrik

Wunderlist 1.2.0 is the latest Android build of Wunderlist. You are right, it is not tablet optimized, but it should nevertheless work on your Sony tablet. An optimized HD version for the bigger screen is on our agenda and will be developed soon. So please stay tuned for the next updates:)

    Best regards
